What Does "Arms" Mean Today?

I have been informed by books written back in the days of our founding fathers that people occasionally gathered in bars to talk and laugh and sing, and eat and drink.  Sometimes when one of the congregants drank too much, he might stagger out to his horse and head off to home safe in the knowledge that the horse knew where “home” was.  Occasionally, stories assure us, a patron would be carried out and placed into his wagon, and his horses would be untied, slapped on the rump and told to “go home”.   Wives sometimes woke late at night or maybe early in the morning and found their horses standing in the driveway, still in harness and with wagon still attached.  And they might find a “retched” thing lying in the back of the wagon.  But times have changed.  Now you stagger out to your car to try to drive home and you are already violating several laws.  The friends you leave in the bar and perhaps even the bartender himself might share in your legal consequences in the event of "your" accident, and those results of DWI are extremely serious and expensive.  Times have changed.

And back in the days of our founding fathers, people also carried their muskets when they went hunting and for security.  They were assured that their new right “to keep and bear arms” granted by their constitution “shall not be infringed”. Those “arms” even included pistols, dueling pistols, although they were not much used by any military unit.  It was not until some sixty years later new rifles that could fire “bullets” were introduced and shortly thereafter new pistols were developed that could also fire those bullets. Twenty years later, new rifles would fire faster, using revolver action, then came the bolt action and finally lever operation.  All this in a little more than 100 years after the Declaration of Independence.

Wars have changed swiftly too.  No longer fought with lance, spear or arrow, now the term military “arms” means guns, machine guns, hand grenades, flame throwers and more.  Cannon are no longer pulled by horses, some are mobile, and some powerful rifles are essentially cannons.  Machine guns have become smaller, and now some powerful rifles are essentially machine guns.  Bullets have become more powerful too, some have their points hollowed out to create greater damage, some are armored and will pierce almost anything, some are designed to ignite or explode on impact.  And some combinations permit multiple options like the ability to fire at speeds of 900 rounds a minute, or just using a 30 round clip, to fire one bullet every 4 seconds say, for two minutes without reloading – and then reloading could be just slipping a new 30-round clip into the rifle.  Or a 100 round clip could be emptied in about seven seconds.

No one, not even the most rabid members of the National Rifle Association considers items like hand grenades, flame-throwers, howitzers, tanks, bombs, atomic or nuclear weapons within the parameter of “arms”– but that’s the way it is TODAY.  Next year, or a few years on down the road, some of these items might begin to appear for sale from the gun and ammunition manufacturers of the United States.  Those powerful corporations that the NRA represents are out to make their profit, and they are very profitable. Perhaps it is time that we as a nation interrupt this Evolution of the term Arms and bring some Intelligent Design into a problem that is clearly getting worse and worse.

What is an Assault Weapon?

An assault weapon is any weapon that will lay down what the military calls “Suppression Fire” which they also sometimes call “Covering Fire”.  This refers to the type of shooting that is intended to make the enemy “take cover” and hide from the barrage of bullets.  It has been referred to as “Withering Fire” and its purpose is to prevent the enemy from firing back, or observing what you are doing, or even trying to get away.

This type of shooting would not effective in hunting.  There would be no food left to clean, cook or eat.  Not effective in self defense either.  Anyone breaks into your house at night and you would destroy your own house, kill your kids, your dogs and cats and  your neighbors too. If your neighbors also own assault weapons they might wake up and fire back, and other neighbors might join in and fire at each other. That would make a hell of a headline.

So I would venture that a good place to start on the definition of an Assault Weapon is ANY weapon that is capable of laying down Suppressive Fire, whether it was originally built for such action or has been subsequently modified to do so.  The fact that it can STILL fire single bullets would not modify the overriding fact it remains an assault weapon and should not be permitted in private ownership. This type of weapon should be reserved for the battlefield.

Republican Purseanality

Apparently the only fans the Republican Party has left are dull, white,  straight, rich and ugly guys who evidently don’t recognize that they are all alone.  Most women, blacks, Asians, Hispanics, LGBT people, poor and middle-class folks, and thinking white guys have been elbowed, shoved or kicked out of the party.

And – Republicans have their hands full.  They shoved themselves off the Fiscal Cliff, now they’re banging their their heads again and again, into the Debt Ceiling, next comes the Sequestration, which they THEMSELVES created, and finally the continuing budget resolutions will drag them on here and there. They really can’t win very much in these encounters, Obama will probably throw them a bone to chew or a crumb for them to wave in triumph but mainly they can only continue to sit around with their arms folded over their chests and dumb-mumble, trying to look wise, even as they contradict that look with the very words they say.

They’re telling Obama that they don’t want any control over guns of any kind, and that if he gives them any “orders”, including issuing any executive directives they will instruct their mayors, sheriffs, and police chiefs all across the various states, cities and regions to disregard them.  Republicans want no background checks, no ban on assault weapons or extended clips, no gun registry etc. As the Republicans cast these bits of wisdom out of their Williamsburg hunker-downery, new Washington Post/ABC News polls show 76% of Americans want background checks on ammunition sales, 71% want a federal database to track all gun sales, 65% want to ban all extended clips and 88% want background checks on all buyers at gun shows.

And there are other polls too.  Like 26% of voters say they really like Republicans. There was another from Huff Post showing the congress coming in two steps behind cockroaches in popularity.

Colin Powell jumped out of the TV to tell them that they don’t know who their constituency is.  Maybe they used to know but that has all changed.  and so has their voters.  Now their allegiance is to the Tea Party, and the great lobbyists like the NRA.

They refuse to cut taxes on anybody, ESPECIALLY the rich guys and corporations, “those Job-Makers”.  This in spite of the fact that those jobs that they make are overseas.  They see nothing wrong in attacking Iraq and Afghanistan, even though that will cost us more than $4,000,000,000,000 (as in TRILLION).  No need to raise taxes for that either, we can pay for it by eliminating Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Their heroes are Grover Norquist, who leads the No Tax revolution and has publicly said he wants to strangle government to death, the Koch brothers who control the American Legislative Executive Committee (ALEC) who are leading the “Stand Your Ground” laws and want to eliminate ALL public transportation, and the NRA who wants no controls over the use of guns.

And there’s more.  They want the rich to get richer, which means the rest of us get poorer, and wind up trying to find work so we can support the rich guys and we can get what they let trickle down to us.  And with a purseanality like that we don’t need any more republicans in office. Not ‘till they change!

The Republican Party is dying.   It is all over.  We, the people of America, are through with it.   Now it is gathering in to its heartless chest the various Tea Partiers, the Religious Right and the Christian Extremists.  The "Great Old Republicans" are largely dead now, with the rest either replaced or chastened.  In its final days it will pass on from a living part of America to an unburied corpse.  BUT – there is the possibility yet remaining that it will serve as a Halloween type garment-covering for a rising fascist rocketlike  spectacular.  Let's hope not.  But what WILL come out of this rotting mess?

War Deaths by Guns

During World War One, World War Two and the wars in Vietnam and Korea, America suffered the deaths of 426,000 combat troops.1   But in the period since Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy were killed in 1968, 1,000,000 American citizens have been shot dead by other Americans with private guns on the streets of America.2

The TOTAL combat deaths in ALL American wars, in some 235 years, has been “only” 651,0001  which is still 350,000 LESS than that 1,000,000 shot dead in American theaters, malls, campuses, restaurants, classrooms, private homes and public streets by American guns in the last 44 years alone.
